There are two types of herpes. Herpes Simplex Virus 1, also known as oral herpes and Herpes Simplex Virus 2 also known as genital herpes. They can be transmitted by direct contact. Herpes affects many people in the population. 85 % of the population has been affected by HSV 1 and 20 % of sexual active people have been exposed to HSV 2. Herpes simplex virus 1 cause cold sores and blisters on mouth. Herpes simplex virus 2 causes cold sores and blisters in genital area like penis, vagina, anus or buttocks. Herpes can be silent once you have got the infection and can become active after sometime. Herpes gets transmitted most probably when the outbreaks are there and you get into physical contact like mouth to mouth contact, mouth to genital contact, genital to genital contact or mother to babies during birth, etc. Symptoms may include pain, tingling and burning sensations. During second outbreak the blisters may or may not be as painful as the previous one and can occur at any body part on the skin. Condoms may reduce the risk of herpes but it is not sure as all the parts are not covered during sexual contact. Diagnosis includes sending the blood samples for test in laboratories. Herpes cannot be cured but still there are medications that can help limit symptoms, decrease episode and reduce pain and risk of transferring it to your partner. You must see a doctor though within 72 hours of the first blister appear as the counseling can help you in limiting the symptoms.
